Liquor Sales Close to Home

Excuse me while I climb back on my soapbox. While you may tire of hearing me rail on about problems with alcohol, I know that booze is a deceiver and a destroyer, and those are a couple of things I don’t like around my community, my family, or anywhere else for that matter.

I was wondering if maybe we could get the City Council in Colleyville to give us a little help. I was reading from the Star-Telegram that they are going to help some entities - why not you and me?

Colleyville voters approved the sale of liquor in May. Ron Ruthven, Colleyville’s community development director, said the council will conduct public hearings Aug. 3 and Aug. 17 before casting final votes on the permits. Ruthven said the council will consider each application individually, applying such zoning restrictions as a 300-foot separation between the property lines of the store and a church, hospital or school. Ft. Worth Star-Telegram – July 25, 2010

Do you suppose we could get the City Council to create a ”300 foot separation”  between the drunk drivers and your teen-age driver, or your mom, or you? Can we get a “300 foot separation” requirement between the drunk drivers and Colleyville’s shiny new fire trucks? (See the article in the same paper regarding a drunk and a fire truck – July 26, 2010 by Domingo Ramirez) And, can we get a “300 foot separation” to keep that cadre of Ft. Worth cops who drink to excess, and then destroy things,  from coming over to Colleyville to buy their liquor?

I’ll trade that “300 foot separation” from my Church for anyone of these. I’ll bet you would too.

I am afraid our society is never going to learn - ” under the influence of strong drink you will be open to disaster.” (Proverbs 23:33-34 AMP)

But all the money they will make….your right to safety is not a consideration. Now try to put a gun store in the same place and all the “we can’t legislate morality” folks will be in line saying how bad guns are for their City.
In 2008 drunk drivers killed ~12,000 people.
Since 2001, 1200 soldiers have died in Afghanistan. Since 2003 4400 soldiers have died in Iraq.
Lost people do lost things and saved people sometimes do the same.

    dp,
How right you are. The new K2 drug, for which I have no appreciation, has sickened two or three people since its introduction in this area, and there is a loud clamor arising for it to be banned. Is alcohol sacred?

How ludicrous is their advertising. During the all star bball game, “bud bush” said their product delivers “full flavor with a crisp, clean finish”. Reminded me of the finishes I witnessed when answering midnight fire calls on resulting car crashes. Didn’t look too crisp and clean to me!
