Thought For The Day

Bravery and Medals

War is. . .well, it doesn’t get much worse in this World. Every soldier, male or female who stands to do battle with an enemy is exercising a kind of bravery that most people know nothing about.

I have a highly decorated friend/soldier in my life (WWII). I listen to his narratives of battle and cringe at the thought of how brave he was (and is) in the face of danger that could end his life at any moment. In my opinion, for all his bravery, he deserves every medal the Military Establishment has chosen to award him. . .and probably more. Does not every soldier who serves valiantly?

The White House also announced that Obama will award the medal [of Honor] in a ceremony on Sept. 15 to two Vietnam War soldiers. . . Army Command Sgt. Maj. Bennie G. Adkins and Army Spc. Donald P. Sloat. The medal is given to members of the Armed Forces who risk their own life in an act of great personal bravery. (Associated Press)

Some are recommended for medals – others not. I doubt the distribution is “fair.” I would not take from any, but would give a lot more to others were I in charge. How can anyone serve well and not be commended for “risking their own life in an act of great personal bravery.” I understand that there are standards for different medals, and that is fine. We just need to remind ourselves of the bravery it takes to enter battle with death as a regular outcome.

One day God will give “awards.” Some will received more than others, and so it should be. It will be “fair.” Everyone will get exactly what they deserve. And that is the scary part. What, if anything, do we deserve? Obviously we don’t deserve to be in Heaven to begin with – that is a gift from God, purchased with the precious blood of Christ, and given to all  who believe. You might want to discover what God has to say regarding this matter. The Day of the Lord is quickly approaching.
